TransAmsterdam is excited to host the WorldPride Premiere of John Rizzo's groundbreaking documentary Trans Rising!


More than a film, Trans Rising is a celebration of authenticity, community, and the universal right to be seen and accepted for who you are.


When & where

On Tuesday August 4th TransAmsterdam is honored to host the WorldPride premiere of Trans Rising at the Parool Theatre!


This evening is made possible through the generous support of The Social Hub.


The film will be introduced by the director, John Rizzo. Afterwards there will be a Q&A with members of the cast and we'll end the night with some drinks and a celebration of Trans Pride!

Time: 19:30-22:00 (doors open at 19:00)

Where: The Parool Theater, Wibautstraat 131D, Amsterdam


The film

Trans Rising is an award-winning feature documentary by filmmaker and photographer John Rizzo that shines a light on the lives of trans people in Amsterdam. Filmed with the support of the trans community and produced by TransAmsterdam, the film shares intimate portraits and powerful personal stories that explore identity, resilience, acceptance, and the courage to live authentically.


Set against the backdrop of one of Europe’s most diverse cities, Trans Rising captures both the challenges and triumphs of the transgender community in Amsterdam. It celebrates the strength of individuals who continue to build lives of dignity, visibility, and connection while inspiring greater understanding and inclusion.

Trans Rising is an award-winning documentary about trans stories, resilience, identity, and the courage to be yourself.


Trans Rising has been selected for more than 30 film festivals worldwide and has received 14 international awards and recognitions for its powerful storytelling and impact. The film’s mission is to give transgender people a voice and to introduce audiences who may not personally know a transgender person to the diversity, humanity, and experiences of the community.


The documentary has been presented internationally in cities and regions including Toronto, Chicago, New York, Vancouver, Los Angeles, Cannes, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Rome, Milan, Florence, Romania, Brazil, Venezuela, Arizona, India, Greece, Texas, Scotland, Hollywood, Oslo, Spain, and San Francisco.


The director

John Rizzo brings more than 40 years of experience behind the camera and has dedicated the past four years to creating films about the transgender community. As an internationally published photographer, his work has appeared in publications including Newsweek, The New York Times, Bloomberg, The Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, Fortune, and Money Magazine, as well as being recognised by organisations such as the Overseas Press Club.
